It would appear that many people with Gitelman's and Bartter's have a tendency to eat pickles or salt without realising that it's actually their body craving it?
If you are affected by either of these conditions, do you crave salty food, or are you a pickled onion/gherkin fiend, or do you simply drink the vinegar from the bottle?
Apparently (according to a couple of GS sufferers) OXO cubes make a tasty snack too!

All of these, but salt is the overriding craving.

Yes the salt craving is thing... I believe the cravings get worse when my blood levels of K and mag go low. But I do like pickles too. But out of the two yes salt and salty foods is the overriding thing. Yeah the oxo thing is nice (but they have changed the bovril cubes recipe, why do they have to mess!! ) The best pickles at the moment are Capers in vinegar (going posh)

Even as a carrier I have always had the salt craving mostly, but have always had the craving for vinegar as well. one of my favourites when growing up was to cut an onion in half and fill the half with vinegar and salt and then eat it, sometimes after filling the half onion I would just drink the vinegar salt mixture and fill the onion again before eating it.

Always want salt on my food but often crave vinegar too, especially on roast potatoes (get some funny looks in restaurants! )
I found it interesting looking at the site info on high potassium & magnesium foods, as many of them are my favourite "go to" foods that I regularly crave.....
Has anyone else found this to be true?

I know that in non-BS/GS people high salt/ sodium diets can lead to stroke. Is there really no upper limit to how much salt/sodium rich foods we can eat? Sometimes I worry whether solving one problem might cause another?
Sue - yes. Even before diagnosis, my favourites foods were always the ones found on high potassium/sodium/magnesium foods lists. Amazing how the body works! I'm one to finish the bottle of capers/olives etc. and then drink the vinegar! Looks insane to anyone who isn't BS/GS.

Hi Verity, and welcome to the group. At the second Patient day earlier this month, exactly that question was raised.
The official response from Ben Walsh and Prof. Karet was that, due to the amount of salt which is being kicked out of your body, and the fact that it would be physically impossible to replace the volume by diet alone, even if you ate nothing but pounds of salt at a time, there is no reason to currently believe that there is any chance of the salt damaging a GS/BS sufferer in the way that it would a non-sufferer as the levels are not being increased but merely supplemented (all be it in very small doses by comparison to the amounts being lost)
Prof. Karet did, however, say that this was based on current understanding and that in, say 100 years, we may look back and say, "ah yes, in a handful of people it did affect them in x, y, and z", but that that is so far ahead, it's not worth worrying about at the moment.

Hi - thanks Mike for updating me! I am out of the country for work at the moment so unfortunately wasn't able to attend. That's all really good to know.
